St. Philip’s is committed to providing a summer school experience for 50 students for 8 contact days in the summer of 2014.
Here is a Summer School Registration Packet.
We have been in conversation about the needs of people in Marysville and the high number of economically disadvantaged households that reside here. We have a number of Marysville SD teachers in our congregation who shared with us that the school district is unable to provide summer school as they have in the past. They shared with us what happens to the education level of children who are from economically disadvantaged households during the summers. They told us that when children do not read well by third grade, their chances of incarceration go up significantly and their economic opportunities go way down.
This is an issue of social justice that we feel strongly about.
What we are offering is not “vacation Bible school.” Instead, we are going to offer an experience to 50 incoming 2nd and 3rd grade students who do not meet testing standards who also come from economically disadvantaged households a learning experience to support their learning in reading, math, physical ed, social interaction, and art. We will meet July 14-18 and July 23, 30, and August 6 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at our facility. We will provide a breakfast and a lunch. In addition we will provide school supplies to each child based on the supplies list from your schools as prizes for their participation
Our mission with regard to the summer camp is: Supporting young learners for our common future.
